So I decided to start my 52 resolution epic, with a very boring but badly needed goal. To record everything I spend my money on during one week. What better week to do this then the first week of 2016!
Full disclosure – I am terrible with money! I never seem to be able to hang onto money. And I have a tendency to “treat myself” on the slightest whim. I am an advertisers dream!
The 5 things I spend most of my money on are:
(Obvious rent and bills are where I spend most of my income – but it’s the discretionary expenditure that I can’t seem to manage!)
The minute I see something I want I tend to impulse buy, regardless of how scary my credit card bill is for the month. I rarely have buyers remorse, because I’ve generally already moved onto my next purchase!
So with a rather large credit card bill looming over me as I entered 2016, I decided that tackling my spending habits should probably be high on my list of priorities. So on January 1st I downloaded Spending Tracker
This is an app that does exactly what it sounds like. You can track your daily income and spending and see exactly where your money is going.
I like this app a lot because it is very simple to set up and use. It’s fairly customisable and I didn’t need to pay for the pro version to get it to do exactly what I wanted. I’d 100% recommend it to anyone trying to rein in their spending. And I plan on continuing on using the app into the future!
So this week, I’m happy to report that I did record every single thing I spent money on. Did I always spend wisely? Hell no! But at least I know where I am wasting my money. I think this week I’m going to buy a travel coffee mug so I can cut down on my weekly coffee bill! Getting coffee on the way to work has become a mindless (and costly) habit. Making my own at home or in the office is way cheaper!
Also I need to shop more wisely for my groceries. I tend to just buy daily whatever I need. I used to make weekly meal plans and have a shopping list but I got lazy and stopped doing this. I’ll save a lot if I plan and buy better!
There was also a few impulse buys – damn January Sales in the shops. But I did manage to resist buying a highly impracticable handbag that had been reduced from €110 to €27. Maybe I am beginning to mature and become a more responsible budget watching adult?
Anyways I think week one of my resolutions was a total success! Now onto the next resolution…
